Supporting Families For a Stronger Community

Celebrating 50 Years of Service

ABOUT US

Our mission is to enable individuals and families to maintain their health, to achieve self-sufficiency and economic stability, to develop resilience in both parents and children, and to allow families to become a contributing part of our community.

Established in 1975 as Voluntary Action of South Lake Tahoe, the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (FRC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides basic needs services, educational opportunities, family advocacy and bilingual counseling for children and adults.

The Family Resource Center works to provide mental health Prevention and Early Intervention services to the Latino and low- income communities of the South Lake Tahoe area. We also offer several other programs that promote resiliency in the Latino and low-income community. The Basic Needs program provides food Monday through Saturday. The center provides oral and written translations, and advocacy related to health, housing, employment, education, and benefits. In collaboration with the Lake Tahoe Community College, the Center offers free English as a Second Language classes. Free bilingual legal services are also available by referral at the Center.

In partnership with Lake Tahoe Unified School District, the FRC is committed to supporting local families deepen their engagement with our schools, teachers, and educational opportunities. We bring principals in as part of monthly English Learner Advisory Committees, providing essential guidance on school programs and resources. We can also assist with enrollment, parent meetings, and any question related to local educational needs.

We host weekly forums with partner agencies to provide vital information about resources in our community, and for community members to offer authentic input into local program and policy decisions. Additionally, we host office hours with a representative from Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless. In cooperation with ADVANCE we offer support for educational and career goals. We are also very pleased to offer ballet folklórico for the whole family two evenings every week.

We are open to the suggestions of the community to help reduce disparities for all community members and work to provide hope and opportunity for those in disadvantaged circumstances. We focus on education as a means to career success and provide support and encouragement to all who ask for assistance. Volunteers are needed throughout the year, and we encourage youth and adults to assist us in a variety of volunteer activities.
